What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a painful and debilitating mosquito-borne viral infection spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Annually, around 400 million people worldwide are infected with dengue.
What are Dengue Fever symptoms?
You will experience the symptoms mostly after four to seven days after infection. They last for around 10 days and include:
- Severe headache
- Sudden high fever
- Severe joint, bone and muscle pains
- Swollen lymph glands
- Febrile seizures
- Pain behind the eyes
How is Dengue Fever diagnosed?
The symptoms of dengue fever may be mild in many cases and are mistaken for flu or other viral infection. Doctors usually use a blood test to diagnose dengue.
Dengue Fever treatment
There is no specific medication or treatment for dengue fever. Dr Mukesh Mahajan performs a medical examination and prescribes medicines to help you manage the symptoms. He always asks his patients to drink plenty of fluids and take complete care and rest.
Further, he advises his patients to monitor their conditions as there are changes for complications. If they start to feel worse after 24 hours of their fever receding, he asks them to reach the clinic or hospital immediately to check for complications.
Complications of Dengue Fever
Generally, people recover from dengue within a week. But in some cases, the symptoms may worsen and become life-threatening. This is known as dengue hemorrhagic fever.
The symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever are:
- High fever
- Bleeding from the nose
- Bleeding from the gums
- Persistent vomiting
- Damage to the blood vessels
- Liver enlargement
- Circulatory system failure
Dengue hemorrhagic fever can trigger dengue shock syndrome, which can lead to excessive bleeding and even death.
What are the causes of dengue fever?
Dengue fever is caused by one of the four dengue viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. It spreads the disease by biting the infected person and then biting someone else.
Once you recover from dengue, you have immunity from the type of virus that infected you, but not from the other three dengue viruses.
Furthermore, you have an increased risk of developing hemorrhagic dengue fever if you are infected again. People living or travelling to tropical and subtropical areas have a greater risk of infection.
Dengue Fever prevention
The best way to prevent yourself from dengue is to reduce the mosquito population and avoid mosquito bites.
Follow the below methods to minimize the risk of dengue fever:
- Use mosquito repellent
- Wear appropriate clothing with full sleeves and pants tucked in the socks
- Avoid populated areas
- Do not leave windows open and use air-conditioning instead
- Doors and windows should have screens
- Use mosquito nets while sleeping
By getting rid of mosquito breeding areas, you can minimize its population. Breeding areas include places where there is stagnant water like flower pots, birdbaths, pet dishes, cans, etc. You should empty or change the water regularly.
